U2achtung.com reports that Bono and Larry met with fans on the beach of Eze during a break of the filming of U2's new video Wednesday afternoon. Having completed several scenes during the afternoon, Larry indicated to the fans that the "real" filming would begin later that evening.

Around 9 p.m., a fireworks show was seen in the sky over Bono's home to honor Bono and Ali's twentieth wedding anniversary. There were a large number of security guards surrounding the home, preventing fans from seeing too much of the video shoot. Part of the set was visible from a distance; the other was protected by a wall surrounding the home.

U2achtung.com staff could hear the song being played for the filming. They describe it as a "magnificent song that begins slowly and ends with a roar." It was played repeatedly.

During the shooting, fans could see Paul McGuiness, Ali, Morleigh, Ann, Jordan, and Eve watching the filming of the video. Paul McGuinness approached the fans and asked that no one take photos of the filming.

The video shoot went on through the night, with the band taking only a few breaks of no longer than 5 minutes.

Around 1 a.m., a small number of fans were allowed to move closer to the set, where they could actually see the band. Bono wore a black leather jacket and sunglasses. The Edge wore a white cowboy hat, t-shirt, and jeans. Adam and Larry were dressed "as usual." Bono was visibly exhausted, but took the time to acknowledge the fans with a wave. When the band wrapped up the video shoot, Adam came over and spoke to the fans briefly.

U2France.com has a report from a French fan who witnessed the filming of U2's new video today
in the South of France. The filming took place on the beach of Eze facing Bono's home with a
small team of 10 people.

The fan witnessed a scene in which Larry is dressed completely in black and standing next to a
bathtub full of water with a mermaid in it. Another scene had Larry sitting next to the mermaid on
a garden swing.

The fan reported hearing some of the song (presumably "Electrical Storm") and commented that
it was "rather slow" in tempo.

Bono, also dressed completely in black and wearing dark sunglasses, wandered around the set.

U2 Preps New Single, Denies N.Y.C. Concert Report
Launch, July 31, 2002

Gary Graff

The new U2 single will be out in September. "Electric Storm," which the Irish quartet has reportedly just recorded, is the title of the first release from U2's second best-of collection, according to a source at Interscope Records. The single will ship to radio on September 16, with the 17-track album due in November.

The new album, a successor to U2's 1998 release Best Of 1980-1990, will include one other new song, "The Hands That Built America," which was written especially for the forthcoming Martin Scorsese film, Gangs Of New York. The band's official website (u2.com) features a snippet of U2 playing the song in the studio.

In other news, U2 is denying published reports that it will take part in a September 5 concert in New York City's Times Square that will coincide with the kickoff of the 2002 National Football League season. In fact, no U2 concert dates are currently scheduled in conjunction with the best-of release, as the group is working on material for its next studio album.

In fact, Bon Jovi will headline the Times Square gig, after which the group will take a helicopter to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where it will also give a halftime performance at the New York Giants-San Francisco 49ers game.

U2 to 'Storm' Back?
U2 will release new single 'Electric Storm' on October 21, according to reports

NME, July 30, 2002

The track, the first of two new songs to feature on a forthcoming Best Of compilation due in November.

"Electric Storm" will be released to radio on September 16, according to French fansite u2achtung.com. A spokesperson for U2 could not confirm the October 21 single release date at press time.

It is unclear what the second new song on the Best Of will be, though for the last few weeks U2 have been streaming snippets of "The Hands That Built America," the song they have written for Martin Scorsese's long-awaited Gangs Of New York epic on their official site.

The 17-track album is due on November 18.

A DVD of U2's greatest hits, including videos to all tracks and a number of additional extras, will appear in early December, rounding up a crowded few weeks of U2 releases. A DVD filmed at the second of the band's historic two Slane Castle shows from 2001 is also in the offing.

U2's Second Greatest-Hits Set Coming In November
Launch, July 11, 2002

Mark Bergman

U2 will release a second volume of greatest hits on November 12. Titled U2 - The Best Of 1990-2000, the album follows the multiplatinum first volume, U2 - The Best Of 1980-1990, which came out in 1998.

The new album will draw tracks from the band's four studio albums recorded during the last decade, and will also include songs "Ms. Sarajevo" [sic] featuring Luciano Pavarotti and Brian Eno, from the Passengers' Original Soundtracks Vol. 1 album; "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me," recorded for the 1995 Batman Forever film; and two new U2 songs recorded specifically for the album, at least one of which will be released as a single.

As with the U2 - Best Of 1980-1990 album, a special edition double-disc version of the album will be available during its first week of release. The special edition will include the hits disc plus a second disc featuring B-sides and rarities from the '90s.

In addition to the new CD, U2 will also be releasing a The Best Of 1990-2000 set on DVD and video, which will mirror the tracks included on the standard album, but will also include some special features, unseen videos, and commentaries from the video directors.

U2swisshome.com Reveals More Details About Fall Releases
@U2, July 11, 2002

Matt McGee

Our friends at U2swisshome.com are reporting additional information from Universal Music about U2's planned releases this Fall, including the release of a DVD to mirror the band's next Best Of album due in November.

As @U2 has previously reported, U2 will release The Best of 1990-2001 worldwide on November 11th (Nov. 12 in North America), with a single to support it to be released on October 21st. The name of the new track is unknown.

U2swisshome.com cites a source at Universal Music to report that the single will released to radio on September 16th.

Further, the source at Universal has told U2swisshome.com that the November 11th Best Of album will be a double-CD set. The first CD will include 17 tracks, including the single and one other new song. The second CD is said to include rarities and b-sides.

U2swisshome.com also reports that the Best Of will be released a week later, November 18th, as a standard single CD. This mirrors the unique release plans for U2's first compilation, U2 Best of 1980-1990 which was released in both double- and single-CD versions over the course of two weeks back in November, 1998, with the double-CD released on November 3rd of that year and the single CD version released on November 10th.

The Best Of album will have a matching DVD which U2swisshome.com's source at Universal Music says will be released in early December with videos for each track on the album and other special features.

Other promotional materials for this set of releases will include U2 Live at Slane Castle, a 45-50 minute film from U2's concert September 1, 2001, in Ireland, which is expected to air on CBS-TV and be released on DVD. U2swisshome.com also reports that fans can expect to see U2 performing the new single this Fall on the BBC's Top of the Pops TV program.
