May 10: Paul David Hewson is born in Dublin, Ireland.
1976
Autumn: Under the name Feedback, Larry Mullen Jnr, Dik and Dave Evans, Adam Clayton and Paul Hewson form a group. They later change name to The Hype.
1978
March 17: Still in school, they win Ģ500 and some studio time in a talent contest in Limerick. The sponsors are CBS, whom they later record for.
March 20: The Hype changes name to U2. Dik Evans leaves the band.
May 25: Paul McGuinness goes to see U2 at a gig in Dublinīs Project Arts Centre. He becomes their manager.
1979
September: Their EP entitled U2-3 is released in Ireland only, on CBS records and tops the charts
December 8: Playing their first UK gigs, U2 are misbilled at The Hope and Anchor pub in London as V2.
1980
January 15: The group play live on the Late Late Show, Irelands leading national chat show. They perform Stories For Boys and win 5 awards a week after in a Hotpress poll.
February 26: Their second single, Another Day, is released by CBS and it peaks at no.1.
March: They play more dates in the UK, and soon after sign a major recording deal with Island Records.
May 23: The single 11 O'Clock Tick Tock is released in Ireland and UK.
August: The single A Day Without Me is released.
October 15: The group play their first gig in mainland Europe in Amsterdam.
October 20: Their debut album, Boy, is released.
December 6: American gig at The Ritz in NYC.

1981
August 8: their first British hit single, Fire, enters the charts peaking no. 35
August 16: U2 play Slane Castle, alongside Thin Lizzy and Hazel O'Connor
October 12: Their second album, October is released. It enters the British charts at no. 11
1982
January 26: U2 perform their first ever rock concert at Dublinīs RDS Hall.
April: their single A Celebration goes to no. 47 in the British charts.
August 8: u2 begin work on their third album, War with Steve Lillywhite at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin.
1983
February: New Years Day goes to no. 10, while the album War reached no.12 in the US.
February 28: In The UK, War is released and goes to no.1.
April 23: A two month American Tour begins
June 5: IT RAINED AT RED ROCKS - The band play at Red Rocks, Denver Colorado. The concert is filmed and released under the name Live Under A Bloodred Sky. A live mini-album is also released and peaks at no.2 in the UK and no.28 in the US.
December: U2 are voted Band of The Year in the Rolling Stone writer's poll.
1984
May 7: U2 begin work on their fourth album, The Unforgettable Fire, with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois at Slane Castle, Co. Meath.
August: Mother Records is established by U2 to introduce undersigned Irish acts.
August 29: U2 play in New Zealand for the first time.
September 29: In Britain, Pride (In The Name of Love) hits no. 3.
